If you’ve ever been to Colorado Springs, you’ve likely heard about the U.S. Air Force Academy. Nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, just north of the city, the Academy spans 18,500 acres of breathtaking natural beauty and world-class facilities. It’s not only a premier military institution but also a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the area. Having lived near the Academy for many years, I can tell you that it’s one of the most inspiring and scenic destinations in Colorado Springs.
Whether you’re interested in military history, architectural beauty, outdoor adventures, or wildlife, the Academy offers something for everyone. Let’s dive into everything you need to know about visiting this iconic landmark.
Getting to the U.S. Air Force Academy
The U.S. Air Force Academy is conveniently located just off Interstate-25. You can access the base through two gates:
- Exit 156 (North Gate) or
- Exit 150 (South Gate)
The gates are open to visitors from 5:30 am to 10:00 pm daily. Upon arrival, all vehicle occupants must present valid photo identification (such as a driver’s license). No one under 18 needs an ID unless they’re driving. Occasionally, you may be asked for proof of insurance or vehicle registration, so it’s a good idea to have these documents handy.
Start at the Visitor Center
A great first stop is the Barry Goldwater Visitor Center, located at 2346 Academy Drive, open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Visitor Center offers a comprehensive overview of the Academy’s mission, cadet life, and the institution’s unique history. You’ll find interactive exhibits, a gift shop, and a theater where you can watch a short film about cadet life at the Academy.
From the Visitor Center, you can begin your self-guided tour, which covers many of the Academy’s most iconic landmarks.
Iconic Landmarks at the U.S. Air Force Academy
- The Cadet Chapel
The Cadet Chapel is arguably the most famous and recognizable building on campus. Its soaring architecture is a symbol of the Academy and draws thousands of visitors each year. Though it is currently under renovation, the chapel is still a top attraction to learn about and admire from the outside. Once renovations are complete, it will once again welcome visitors inside its beautiful multi-faith sanctuary.
- Polaris Hall and Honor Court
Not far from the Cadet Chapel is Polaris Hall, an impressive facility where cadets participate in leadership development programs. Adjacent to Polaris Hall, you’ll find the Honor Court, which is home to numerous statues and plaques that commemorate the Academy’s core values and significant military heroes.
- Falcon Stadium
As home to the Academy’s Division I football team, Falcon Stadium is a must-see for sports fans. Catching a game here, with the mountains as a backdrop, is an unforgettable experience, especially during the fall when the leaves are turning.
- The B-52 Display
On your self-guided tour, make sure to stop by the B-52 Stratofortress Display. This impressive aircraft, stationed near the Visitor Center, is a reminder of the Academy’s long aviation tradition and connection to the U.S. Air Force’s rich history.
Hiking and Biking Trails
For nature lovers, the U.S. Air Force Academy is home to several well-maintained trails that allow you to take in the beauty of the Front Range. One of my personal favorites is the New Santa Fe Trail, which stretches for 7 miles along the eastern side of the base. It parallels I-25 and provides scenic views of the Rockies, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Other popular trails include:
- Falcon Trail: A longer loop trail perfect for mountain biking.
- Stanley Canyon Trail: For the more adventurous, this trail leads you through stunning rocky terrain and rewards you with a small but scenic reservoir.
- Eagle’s Peak Trail: A more challenging hike that leads to one of the best panoramic views of the Colorado Springs area.
Wildlife at the Academy
The Academy’s expansive grounds are home to a variety of Colorado wildlife. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to spot animals such as:
- Mule deer
- Wild turkeys
- Red foxes
- Elk
- Black bears
- Mountain lions
If you’re out hiking or driving through the grounds, keep an eye out, and always follow the Academy’s rules regarding wildlife: keep a safe distance, move quietly, and don’t feed or attempt to interact with the animals.
Fishing and Outdoor Recreation
If you’re lucky enough to have a connection to the military or know someone who does, there are several lakes on the Academy’s grounds available for fishing. The main campus has five lakes, while three additional lakes are located at the Farish Recreation Area. Fishing is only open to active duty military, retirees, disabled veterans, DoD civilians, and certain sponsored guests. If you’re eligible, it’s a great way to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Planetarium and Educational Shows
Another hidden gem at the Academy is its state-of-the-art Planetarium. With a full-dome 8K projection system and immersive surround sound, the Planetarium offers free public shows that are both educational and entertaining. The shows range from space exploration to natural history and are perfect for all ages. Be sure to check the schedule, as it may be closed on holidays or special Academy events like graduation.
Tips for a Smooth Visit
As a local who has spent many years living near the Academy, here are some insider tips for your visit:
- Arrive early: The Academy is a popular tourist spot, especially in the summer. Arriving early in the morning allows you to beat the crowds and enjoy the trails or Visitor Center at a leisurely pace.
- Check the weather: The Academy sits at an elevation of over 7,000 feet, so be prepared for sudden changes in weather. It can be warm and sunny one minute, then windy and cool the next. Dress in layers and bring sunscreen.
- Respect the cadets: Keep in mind that the U.S. Air Force Academy is a working military base, and cadets are often in training or moving between classes. While visitors are welcome in designated areas, be respectful of the cadets and their space.
- Don’t forget your ID: As mentioned earlier, valid photo ID is required to access the base. Ensure everyone in your vehicle (over 18) has a driver’s license or another form of identification. Expired IDs won’t be accepted.
- Plan for a full day: With so much to see and do, you can easily spend a full day at the Academy. Pack some snacks or plan for a meal in nearby Colorado Springs after your visit.
